INDEX & INTRODUCTIONThe original main purpose of this website was to give an account of the cave digging at Home Close Hole, Wigmore Farm, Red Quar, Mendip, UK. However, I thought that just the raw, undiluted account might prove far too exciting, so it's been diluted with a few other items that might be of interest and some that probably will not be, but they are going in anyway. The latest information about Home Close may be found in LATEST (where else?) Other Home Close material may be found in:- Previous Years, PhaseOne and Photographs. Links may well have links in it (but you had better check to make sure). References contains published works on Wigmore Swallet and Home Close. More! contains a jumble of other stuff too varied to list here, but DON'T PANIC, it does have its own index page. W ? is a new page, dealing with things beginning with 'W'. Initially this is limited to WHERE? (is the dig) and WHY? (bother to dig it), but the page will be extended to include such burning questions as WHEN? (will we start digging) and WHAT? ('s the point) and possibly WHO? (cares). Introduction The digging at Home Close Hole may be conveniently divided into four main phases; firstly, the initial JCB excavation of a great open-cast pit in the depression (hopefully) over the high avens in Wigmore Swallet and the installation of a concrete pipe shaft. Secondly, surface works in preparation for sinking the shaft below the level of the concrete pipes. Thirdly, the sinking process itself and fourthly and finally, the triumphant break-through into the cave passages below. So far, phase one has been completed; phase two has been going on for far too long and we live in hope that the final two phases will satisfy our wildest expectations. Well, there would be no point in doing any of this otherwise, would there ? Note: There are those who insist on referring to this hallowed spot as Holm Close Hole, or sometimes Holme Close Hole - they are mistaken, but I mention it here to get the alternative names indexed by the search engines. Excuses, excuses: This website is young - still in nappies and there is quite a lot yet to be added. It will get better eventually, when I have finished doing important jobs like mowing the car, polishing the lawn and fixing the winch engine (I thought I'd done that).
